While reading about the upcoming 4e version of Dark Sun a thought occurred to me. There's an idea the designers will be using in that game that would really help to create a good set of modern rules.
Specifically I'm talking about themes (which Dark Sun will use to create Templars, Elemental Priests and Gladiators among others). Maybe someone all ready had this idea but I thought how the idea of themes could be adapted to fit a modern rule set.
My idea is the game would have say four or so base classes (probably one for each role with different builds) and then you would apply one of a dozen (or more) themes to create exactly the character you are hoping to build. So there would be a soldier theme or a daredevil theme or a investigative journalist theme. If you wanted to create a cop you might combine the Striker base class with the cop theme, for instance.
These themes would act as combinations of the occupations and the advanced classes from d20 modern and more themes could be released with each supplement.
Anyway it's just a thought.
