D&D 4E 4e players who converted to 5th edition

This is not meant to be an edition war so please don't post anything like that. I'm curious mainly about people who STARTED with 4th edition D&D and then switched to 5th edition when it came out.

What is your opinion? Do you like it better? Worse? Was it a far bigger change than you expected? Are you sorry that you missed out on Basic-3rd edition?

Just curious.

seeing as how I started with 2e, I can't directly give an opinion, but my 8 year old nephew and 6 year old niece are both enjoying playing with the game. We started with the board games based on 4e, then moved into full 4e. We have done 3 one shots (well 2 with 5e and 1 with the last playtest but close enough).

My nephew really enjoyed 4e, especially the Ranger class. He loves the idea of multi classing in 5e though and so far has wanted to multi all 3 characters.

My niece on the other hand is HOG wild for 5e. SHE wants to make every spell caster ever. She asked me if I could create a reverse devil warlock for her to do next time, so I said "Sure like an angel" and her answer was "No still making demon pact but with cold based stuff so I can freeze people."

the only complaint either has had so far is that they wish at will powers and max on crits came over from 4e, they don't miss healing surges or anything else though.

And I would like the max on Crits too. Possible house rule there...or maybe reserve it for double hits on Advantage, one a 20, the other just a normal hit.

I played 4E for a year before my table disbanded because peoples lives got busy.

I love 5E a thousand times more. Combat moves much faster, there's a "less is more" approach with the rules, less math... 5E flows much, much smoother. Also, there's more "gray area" with abilities and such in 5E, this allows for creative uses and problem solving. 4E, at least at my table, didn't allow that so much because every attack power in 4E is preset to do X and only X.

Also, and this may be unfair to say because 5E is in its infancy compared to 4E, but... Certain things just never got support in 4E, or seemed halfway done. This made certain character concepts really rough without homebrewing. I'm talking about Essentials and some classes that just never saw much love or options. I know why things got that way in 4E, I know the change in designers and the intent behind things, but that doesn't help me as a player, and it doesn't help my character.

I'm not familar withi 4e. What do you mean by "max on crits"? Do you mean max damage on a critical hit? Because that's been around for decades, and if so, I agree with you. I would have liked that better than the roll double dice thing now.

in 4e if you crit you deal max weapon damage. then if you have a magic weapon it may or may not have an effect on a crit, the basic +X weapon deals +1d6 damage per + on a crit...

so When Lily crit with her sword that normally deals 2d8+7, it would deal 23 damage. If it was a +2 sword that did 2d8+9 then it would deal 25+2d6. SOme magic weapons had d8' or higher and some had cool effects. I know Joey played a ranger who had a 19+ crit range and deals +1d12 per + damage. I think that there was also an open ended roll (might have been third party) one of my more adult (I can't say more mature then the two kids) players had that did 2d4+16 with an encounter power and on a crit did 24+1d10+3d6 and if any of the d6 came up 6's he could reroll and add. In one fight (he will never let us forget) he crit for over 100 damage with an encounter power when he droped 3 6's then rerolled all of them and 2 of them came up 6's, then both came up 6's again, then one kept coming up 6's...

I started RPGs with 4e and 5e feels like losing 50 pounds and going running. I say this as a player in 4e and a player recently-turned DM in 5e.

I like max on crit. It's actually less damage than rolling all the dice again but it also means no rolling all the dice again. Either that or say a crit does average damage per die you just have 2x normal. I see no reason to have a rogue with a 10d6 crit roll 20d6. Just do 70 damage and call it a day. Even if you have 20 sets of dice (and I do) I don't want to waste time watching someone roll and count that many.

Heck, I'm at the point now where, as a DM, just have all monsters do average damage. If I have a 1/2 HP left over I carry it to another attack. Just keep a coin next to me and flip it over each time I have that 1/2 HP.
