Just read about kindle on Amazon. I must say I am very excited by the propect of Kindle. I seriously hope that RPG publishers will have their books available for use on the Kindle device.

It looks interesting but.. kinda smallish for most RPG work? That keyboard seems to take up an inordinate amount of room, too. But having the ability to search a book.. man, I'd love that. I'd like to hear from anyone that has one. Sounds pretty cool.

Yyes, as RPG books are currently formatted. However, that doesn't mean that the publisher couldn't reformat their works to be efficient for Kindle.

$400 just for the device, and then you need to buy the books to read? As cool as it looks, I'm not interested at that price. I'm with Hobo. If it is still around and in wide use in 5 years and costs less than $100, I might consider it.

Of course by then Apple will probably have adapted the iPod to do the same thing, but better.

Can this one do pdfs?

I know the sony one can... This one is cool because of the wifi thingy... Dunno if they'd offer RPG books in their store though... :p

They don't mention PDFs at all. The mention Word documents, JPG, .GIF, .BMP, .and PNG can be e-mailed to the device for viewing, but the lack of a mention about PDFs makes me suspect it will not display them.

The Kindle is black and white only and does not handle PDF's well, so don't expect the Player's Handbook to be available for it immediately.

However, there's nothing stopping you from downloading the SRD as a text file and converting it to a .mobi format and transferring it to the Kindle via the USB cable. You could do that with the 3.5 SRD today, and include your house rules in it and everything.

But for the gaming table I'd rather just have a laptop. The Kindle doesn't allow me to Alt-Tab over to my spreadsheets or maps. This really is just a "reader", and not dynamic enough for the gaming table (IMO, YMMV, etc., of course). I think the best usage scenario for the Kindle is reading the newspaper on the train/bus in the morning, or reading a novel under a shade tree.

And $400 is pricey, but you actually may save money in the end if you already buy enough books / subscribe to several newspapers. The prices on the media are very competitive (e.g., $9.99 for a new book then available only in hardcover for no less than $17).
