4th Edition, Kindle & The Future of Gaming Books

People interested in e-Ink readers may want to look at the Bookeen Cybook and the iRex iLiad, which are much more open-format friendly. The Sony somewhat less so; it has its own proprietary format, but it will also read PDFs (with difficulty, as other have noted already), and RTF files. The Kindle is the least open of any of them.

The Kindle is $400, the Cybook $350, the Sony eReader $300, and the iLiad $700. If I could afford it I'd get the iLiad, which has a much larger screen (8.1" as opposed to 6" for all the others) that also serves as a touchpad. It also has built-in 802.11B/G. The only feature that the iLiad seems to lack that the others have is Mp3 format (if you care to read and listen to music at the same time). My second choice is the Cybook, which runs the Mobipocket PRC format, PalmDoc, HTML, TXT, and PDF natively. The Cybook does have the least internal memory (64mb), but it takes SD cards so that is pretty irrelevant for most of us (just factor in the $25 cost for a 2gb SD card when considering the price).
