4 Winds Fantasy Gaming announced today that it is working on its own original game system. "We have enlisted CJ Ruby to design the system for us, based on his exceptional homebrew games he has run at MisCon in Missoula, Montana for a number of years. CJ's games have become so popular at the con that he usually has a waiting list of extra folks to get in, and he has earned a bit of a reputation in the Mountain West as the kind of GM and storyteller you want to play under," said 4 Winds Fantasy Gaming publisher Robert Thomson. The system will be called "CJ Ruby's Exploding Aces: A Cinematic RPG". The game uses 6-sided dice only, and the "Exploding Aces" refers to the fact that all 1s that are rolled "explode", or are rolled again (and again and again, if you keep rolling a 1). The system will be simple one, with plenty of room for flexibility for both GMs and players alike, and will focus on allowing GMs (called "Directors" in this system) to tell cinematic-style stories. What does "cinematic-style stories" mean? Exploding Aces is being designed for fast-paced, action-filled stories that emulate 80s-style action movies, Clint Eastwood Westerns, or modern horror films. Ideally, each adventure should last one 4- to 6-hour game session, though cliff-hanger endings for a session are always a possibility as well. The system will also include notes on different styles of play, including the traditional campaign-style game, emulating multi-sequel film franchises or long-running TV shows. It will also include notes for Directors on running short, one-shot adventures that are not connected to a campaign. Each game session might be a completely different genre, and the Director may even create the characters and hand them out to players in a pre-game "casting call". CJ Ruby's Exploding Aces enters beta playtesting as of today. The first approved playtest group is being headed up by ENnie Awards judge Jay Peters of Missoula, Montana. The next playtest group will be headed up by CJ himself at the Sandbaggers Club here in Great Falls, Montana. "The beta playtest is very limited, but we are looking for a couple more groups to test the game," said Robert. If you are interested in playtesting Exploding Aces, send an e-mail to 4WindsFantasyGaming [at] gmail.com. In the e-mail include the size of your gaming group and how often you meet. The other playtesters will be chosen by July 17, 2010, so get your name in quick if you are interested.
