$50 spending money: help me

sellars

Explorer
Ok, so I have rationed my gaming materials purchases. For good reason! (to keep the peace at home with the chief executive of purchases (otherwise known as darling))

This month's budget: fifty bucks!

What to buy??

I don't really *need* anything (but don't tell anybody! ;) )

I am thinking about Ebberon and AU. But any reccomendation is welcome, think: adventures, fluffy books (especially fluffy books), region books for FR, anything.

in short: If you would find $50 in an onld jar in a game store, where would you spend it on?

Enlighten me!

My limit is $40. It can be tough.

My first bit of advice is that if you're buying WotC to, well, perhaps compare the prices offered at your FLGS to amazon.com. With your budget you could probably buy two books instead of one. Obviously, if you do order from somewhere, go with the cheapest shipping method.

Anyway, on to the list...

1) Dragon and/or Dungeon. These are fantastic magazines and a really great buy. Also there is the upcoming EN World Gamer which will offer a lot of good stuff.

2) A Magical Mideval Society: Western Europe - a must for any world design.

3) Eberron or Unearthed Arcana. Great books. UA is a fun read and you'll probably only use about 10% of the book, but it's cool to browse through. Ebberron ... well ... I probably can't tell you anything you don't already know; it's a good book.

4) Dragon Magazine CD-ROM - You'll have to get this on e-bay. If you remember playing D&D in the 80s or earlier and you subscribed to Dragon during that time, this is simply an amazing product. Worth it for the old Wormy cartoons alone.

... those are my current faves.

The Iron Kingdoms Campaign Guide is a great book that has just come out. It is a beautifully done book, and has some very original flavor/crunch

You can get it at frp games http://www.frpgames.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=10144

or enworld rpg shop if your LGS doesn't have it.

Other (fairly) recent books I have bought that I like a lot:

Eberron - some good game material for harvesting even if you run a homebrew - Interesting read anyway

Serpent Kingdoms : Easy to use this book even if you don't run FR, but still want to add a layer of Serpentine nastiness into your campaign

Malhavoc's Chaositech : Create a whole new brand of bad guys! With weird stuff your players probably can't fully utilize

Green Ronin's "Thieves Quarter" city sourcebook. A great start to a useful new series detailing a fantasy city

I recommend E.N. Arsenal: Spiked Chain. This is a great little PDF and won't take much out of your budget.

Ronin Arts also has lots of great PDFs at reasonable prices.

And for a bit of personal self promotion, there are several sets of e-Adventure Tiles that are half-price right now.

$50.00 will go a long way at RPGNow.com, you should check it out.

I'll have to second the suggestion of the Iron Kingdoms Campaign Guide. Check out the Iron Kingdom's website for more detail on the setting... http://www.ironkingdoms.com/

It is 'full metal fantasy', ie fantasy D&D with steam and the best firearm rules i've seen. Tweaks on magic, arcane and divine to make it a little more meaningful. It's not for everyone, but hey, the people it's not for I wouldn't want to game with..

You can send two Giants of Legend boosters to VB down the old bunny hole, or you can get the Eberron CS for yourself - but take a look through it first. Eberron is a wonderful setting but it ain't everyone's cup o' tea - make sure it jives with what you and your group wants.

Among recent releases, I'd pick up "Lords of the Night: Zombies" by Bottled Imp Games (top-notch quality publisher, loved the previous editions in this series, "Vampires" and "Liches") and "Tome of Horrors II" by Necromancer Games (I really got a lot of use out of the original "Tome of Horrors"). I think "Zombies" is $22 and "Horrors" is $35, so it's a bit over $50, but these are pretty solid purchases.

Hmm.... if you do not know what to spend your money on, I have a very good cause... the make Whisper72 rich fund. The cause is currently very much underfunded, and any spare cash is greatly appreciated.... ;)
