[5E] Classic Modules Conversions

First Post
Backdrop: I am running a couple of Campaigns in Fantasy Grounds. We are currently playing 5E but there is the option to use Pathfinder if necessary.

Question Posed: Has anyone found 5E particularly unsuited for these classic module conversion? Has anyone had positive results and experiences in taking players through these oldies using the 5th Edition rules?

Comments: I did see that a couple of downloads have been included in the 5e Conversions Library, but not many. I am curious if this is because there hasn't been much interest in doing so or for other reasons. It would probably be easier to fit them in a Pathfinder setting, but I have some newer players that might be more comfortable with the less rule heavy 5th Edition over trying to integrate them into Pathfinder.

That said, if PF would more adequately represent the feel of the early editions adventures, I could easily set the players who need help up with more streamlined rules and characters to allow them to play the modules I remember fondly in that ruleset.

I have dabbled already myself, having converted UK5, Eye of the Serpent, to 5E but found it a bit challenging...though some of that may very well be on me while I learn how to better balance the simplified creatures of OD&D/AD&D to 5E's upscale power. The players are having fun with the adventure itself, the story and different style it presents, the fact of the matter is that the encounters have been rather mundane.

Thus, it begged the question... do I need to really work hard on converting creatures and encounters better, to make it fit with the 5E style better? Or am I fighting a losing battle where I am either going to have to work to hard to get them to fit and/or lose the feel for these classics by converting them to a system that isn't suited for the old "dungeon crawl/exploration" D&D of the 80s?

Hoping to get some feedback here from those who've given it a shot or at least considered it and comes to some conclusions. It's not hard to set up FG as a VT to host these adventures, so what really matters most is that the verve of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, Desert of Desolation series, or Chateau d' Amberville comes through.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't done any formal conversions but all my old modules would be fairly easy to play in 5e. Since I know the old systems they were written for, it would not be much trouble to do conversions on the fly. The only trick would be a few monsters whose power relative to PC's has changed. For instance, a single AD&D goblin was not a serious threat to a 1st level fighter but a 5e goblin is easily equal to a 1st level fighter.

There are some good conversion tools here. http://stanshinn.com/dnd-5e-resources/

You can run Keep on the Borderlands with little conversion. Most of the archetypes and monsters from the Monster Manual can be run as is with a bit of numbers present adjustment. You have to do a bit of work with the evil temple area, but that is fun. I made the High Priest of the Temple of Chaos into a Legendary Encounter with the temple giving lair actions and the priest having legendary actions. I was surprised how easy Keep on the Borderlands was to run for 5E.
