Some of us aren't even snappy-dressed (getting corpse-juice out of worsted wool is a dry-cleaning nightmare). Anyways, there have been a number of threads where people have just lit into Mearls for things he's said (that do not align with their preferred interpretation). Now, there have been some actual factual discrepancies, but even those tend to be reasonable errors that a non-hostile conversation would probably clear up. I'm not predisposed to give Mearls the benefit of the doubt (based on the Zak S situation), but --having lived in that world-- everything he's recently said lines up with someone recounting the internal company understanding/perspective. I question this. The TTRPG market in Japan has traditionally been small enough that it would be responding to trends, not influencing them. Regardless, until 2014, the largest RPG in Japan was Sword World RPG. CoC shot to the top after it was referenced heavily in the anime adaptation of the novel series Haiyore! Nyaruko-san. I deeply suspect that common cultural familiarity with tentacled animals and a longstanding penchant for monster myths in general* was the main influence and predates CoC. That certainly opened the door for Lovecraft (or 'lovecraftian themes') in general. *plus a weird confluence of laws pertaining to animated adult entertainment difficult to discuss here. And then everyone except the two parties that participated in the legal scuffle benefit from their expenditure. Can't imagine why this hasn't been settled once and for all.
