Bastions, Bastions, Bastions… What a delight it would be to own a bastion in Cormyr! Something we were talking about on Ed Greenwood’s Discord server was the idea of a portal discovered by player characters underneath their bastion. This wouldn’t be something the players would have to achieve high levels to obtain. In fact, it could be one of the two bastion rooms a character obtains at 5th level. I like the idea of players deciding where the portal exits (within limits). Now suppose they choose Baldur’s Gate. One player could then elect to create their bastion within that city. Now the players have the option of adventuring in Cormyr and Baldur’s Gate. And when the players take a Bastion turn, one option could be rolling up some income for allowing a handful of Cormyrean spies (e.g., War Wizards and Highknights) to pass through their portal and into Baldur’s Gate for a small fee, unbeknownst to that city’s authorities. The players could offer their portal passage service to the hundreds of factors (business agents) operating in Cormyr, too. If the players rolled a mishap on their Bastion turn, then perhaps a Highknight got scrambled up after entering the portal and appeared in Baldur’s Gate, but inside out and quite dead. Or maybe a factor arrived in Baldur’s Gate naked and bereft of coins, contracts, and any magic items they were carrying for their protection. The result is no portal income for that turn because customers stay away for a time. (No one likes to show up inside out, hey?) That would be a fun Bastion turn story for players to tell their DM about at the gaming table.
