That makes sense, to have some guidelines. But the general discussions and game design seems to indicate that people feel otherwise. And the guidelines in the DMG do have guidelines for individual encounters too. I suppose part of the issue for me is that I never really know what the characters are going to get into, so I guess I don't really plan based on what I think day's worth of encounters entails. Or even a single encounter. A good example is the trolls in The Hobbit. They were really too powerful for them to handle, and while I try to avoid the "Gandalf (Elminster) showing up to save the day" situations, they only had to stall the trolls a little while longer for the sun to be high enough to take care of the problem anyway. Which reminds me, we still don't have any trolls that turn to stone in sunlight in D&D. Maybe there has been, in all of the 3e and 4e monster releases. Sounds like a good variation for Cave Trolls... They kind of take care of that themselves when they determine they need a break. I only allow one long rest a day (basically a night's rests), and I handle short rests differently. So it's really a matter of them figuring out a way to keep themselves safe if they feel they need to avoid combat or other dangers for a while. If they go in over their head, and can't get a place to take a break, then they'll need to come up with a different plan (like surrender maybe?). Ilbranteloth
