6 Core Classes? Has anyone done this or seen anything like it?

I suppose it could be done for just about any d20 based system, I just happened to think of it for pathfinder. So everyone has seen the basic Warrior, Rogue, Caster variants throughout the years in multiple games. I was thinking about something like that for pathfinder. A sort of generic class system then modifiying it from there. I wanted some base classes that could you could cherry pick abilities from other classes and then go from there. However It just occurred to me what about the other traits? So each attribute would have an associated class. You would have Warrior, Expert, Defender (for lack of a better term) , Mage, Diviner, and Noble.

I'm trying to approach the pathfinder/d20 system while keeping the options , just selecting them in a different way. I'm coming from looking at games that you could build your own character however you want (hero system/ mutants and masterminds/ GURPS). I'm not saying this will work out, or wont, but I enjoy thinking about things like this and was wondering if anyone had seen something similar using pathfinder?

I've seen at least one Diablo-style MMO in beta that works like this: it offers three stats for your character - Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. One class is represented by each stat, then there are three hybrid classes that share trats from each (Str/Dex, Str/Int, Dex/Int).

Your core six might look like:
Warrior/Defender (Str)
Expert (Int/Dex)
'Hunter' (Dex)
Mage (Int)
Diviner (Str/Int)
Noble (Str/Dex)

Con, Wis and Cha can then be used as they were intended (Con for HP, Wis for Perception, Cha for people skills), or perhaps you could find new uses for them.

It's doable, but I'd not want to put in the work to get it to work. I have mused about a Pathfinder campaign that prohibits races, classes, and spells (except for cantrips and orisons) from the core rule book. :)

This isn't specifically Pathfinder, but it might be a good reference. Plus, it's free!
