Find arcane prep and quicken to be a great combination for me. Tend to make wide use of both of them. I noticed Assay Resistance trawling through the CA the other day. Would definitely seem the better way to go from a spell penetration point of view. IME, stuff which has a high SR will generally make it's saves against my spells. Which leaves me using damaging effects - I tend to rely on the elemental orb spells and they don't offer SR... ah well, I supose it's a feat that'll be useful sometime! Is the Incantrix from FR setting? Is it working out well? What's the theme of it? Still not plotted out exactly where I'm heading from here. It will involve the final, transcending level of Alienist at some point. The other 3 levels will most likely be in Archmage. For the rest of 8th level, it's likely Mindblank + Polymorph any Object My original idea was to take Gate as my first 9th level spell and couple it in with that final Alienist level. Beyond that, I'm not 100% sure - Reaving Dispel, Shapechange and Time Stop all hold their charms... A half baked plan has been growing on me as a Gate replacement. :) Lacks the travel and versatility, but doesn't cost 1000 XP. - I would take my 18th level feat from the Complete Adventurer. Can't recall the name, but it lets you maintain concentration as a Move action. Couple that up with the Elemental Monolith summoning spell - describe with more tentacles. Woo! - an elemental horror from beyond. Would suit me nicely. :uhoh: After all, the Wizard and Cleric should both be able to gate if we need to. If I'm ever in dire need of getting on or off a plane, then a Limited Wish can get me a clerical Plane Shift. Another option I've been considering is to branch into counterspelling. Take Improved Counterspelling feat. The arcana which allows you to redirect spells instead of countering them. Swap out Hold Monster for Duelward. Course this is all rather subject to campaign events. Not least of which is surviving. :)
