Sorry to ask a stupid question, but how on earth can you search the forum. Do i have to "pay to become a community supporter so that i may search" like is indicated on top of the screen or am i missing something.

So i do have to pay in order to search the enourmous amount of threads in the forums.

Yes; since searching is resource-intensive, it helps keep the site running. You have a couple of alternatives, though.

1. Each forum index can be sorted by time, number of replies, number of views, and author.

2. If you ask in meta, folks will generally be happy to hunt something specific down for you.
