He was the only child of two tenure-track professors at the University at Albany-SUNY. His mother was a professor of political science and his father, law. Both were dedicated to their jobs, and Marcus's entire life was an afterthought. He grew up quiet and self-sufficient, and learned much about politics. When he finished high school, he of course went to SUNY-Albany and graduated with high honors. He then continued on to law school through the SUNY system. He passed the bar with flying colors and is licensed in New York State to this day. Instead of joining or starting a practice, he became a minor speechwriter for the just-forming gubernatorial campaign of Mario Cuomo. He rose steadily in the ranks and quickly became Cuomo's top speechwriter. Throughout his tenure, Marcus was Cuomo's right-hand man. When Pataki was elected, Marcus left the governor's office along with Cuomo. Shortly thereafter, he met an ambitious young woman in an Albany night club. They had a few drinks, and she said a lot about New York City and Washington, D.C., and the upcoming (1996) Presidential election. Marcus saw the White House in his immediate future and agreed to meet her again. To his surprise, she and her counsellors met him, and they spent the night discussing politics. It was not until later that Marcus realized he had been administered and passed a grilling test. Two nights after, the woman met him again at the club and invited him back to her apartment. He went readily and learned the truth. The woman, Elena Montescue, was the Prince of Albany (her gender notwithstanding) and required his services in New York City. There was no move toward Washington, but a whole other world was opened to Marcus.Given the choice between conquering--from behind the scenes--a different sort of politics, and death, Marcus almost eagerly chose the Embrace. He now works as one of Elena's most trusted agents and is in New York ostensibly on her business. He spends a lot of time in the (New York) Prince's presence, advising and strengthening the city (NYC). His secondary mission is to see if there is any possibility of promotion for Elena, overtly or not. Albany, though the state capitol, is not the highest she feels she can get. However, Marcus is ambitious himself and while he is capable of pulling many strings in his current role, he desires much, much more. He knows that his best course is to continue as Elena's trusted adviser. Should she fail, he would still be in a position to take over, at least as Albany's Prince. No one would be terribly surprised or upset by his ascension. Should she succeed, he would be right behind her, controlling everything from a much safer place.His parents still teach at SUNY-Albany, but Marcus hasn't spoken to them since he started work with Cuomo's campaign. Neither he nor his parents have had time or inclination, taking each other mostly for granted and sending the occasional birthday or Christmas card.Marcus will only drink from politicians and politial hangers-on, viewing the turn-around as highly amusing. (That is, lackeys and such are okay, but the prostitute a candidate sleeps with is not.) Through his extensive political career, Marcus has trained his memory to remember details, in case any small thing would provide him or his candidate advantage. His Embrace has only made his memory better, and he can recall almost instantaneously any information, trivial or not. His naturally charismatic nature was also increased, making him an even more persuasive person. He has also retained the ability to eat and drink, which makes him more effective in his occasional dealings in kine politics. From his mortal days, he still has some pull in New York, and doesn't hesitate to use it to further Elena's (and his) cause. Marcus has major contacts in the district attorney's office and the police department, people whose friendships and trust he has cultivated over the years.Marcus has retained some mortal superstitions and cannot cross running water. (The trip into the city proper was done during the day.) He also is repulsed by garlic, which could be partially due to his small amount of Asian heritage--the garlic myth originated in the East.Marcus has always been a tall, lanky, and moderately attractive man. His attractiveness did not decrease much with his Embrace, and his pale complexion and extremely thin nature have so far been explained away to his kine contacts by a non-contagious, but highly complicated disease.</blockquote>
