A blind Druid NPC

I want to create an NPC Khaasta (CR 3) that is a blind Druid. I want him to work as an ECL 5 character.

What would I do to balance him out due to his blindness and still get results of an ECL 5? Would giving him an extra Druid level make up for his blindness?

There is a feat in Races of Stone that might be what you want:

Earth Sense [General]

You are in tune with the earth beneath you.

Prerequisites: Con 13, Wis 13.

Benefit: As long as you are touching the ground, you can take a move action to sense the number of creatures within 20 feet that are also touching the ground and the direction to each one. You cannot pinpoint the location of any creature with this feat.

Special: Creatures with the air or aquatic subtype may not select this feat.

I guess a better way of asking my questions would be....

If an NPC is permanently blinded, how does that affect the ECL? Will he be considered a CR lower or anything?

A CR 5 creature that is always blind won't perform as a CR 5 creature. So I'm just trying to figure out a good way to balance it out. I'd like to make him a higher level caster if it will balance things out and keep him as tough as a CR 5 creature. :)

IIRC there is a psionic power called "feel light" that might be useable if somehow connected with a magic item.

Also, some way to get the druid "sonar" or echolocation would be nice.

Well I'm not really trying to band-aid his blindness. I don't mind him having the penalties to being blind. I also don't mind that he can't figure out what square PC's are in. I'd rather just pump up his spellcasting ability or something to keep him an equal CR if possible.

So rather than trying to figure out where the PC's are, he just sits there casting spells sort of wildly. I'm just not sure how to do this fairly. :heh:

Ah, I gotcha.

Well, that is a tricky thing to calculate. Blindness is a pretty disabling effect in this game. My instincts say -2 to the CR.

Where are the Khaasta?

If the base creature is CR 3 or thereabout, pre-blindness, I assume some amount of racial HD, depending on associated classes, it is entirely possible that this fellow has several more levels of druid than a human CR 5 druid, possibly enough to gain wildshape. (He's a druid, he's gonna have Natural Spell)
That means:
The real question is, if he can wildshape, is he still blind?

Anyways, more on topic, I concur with Mistwell and Moon-Lancer on -2 CR.

Max out Listen, as Listen Checks can give a general direction.

I recommend an enclosed area, large AoE spells, and summonings.
If he has an animal companion with him, and he probably does, it's possible that the companion can tell him what direction and roughly how far different enemies are. This means, though, that if the companion dies, he's probably very shafted and displeased.

Khaasta are in the Fiend Folio.

He actually will be in an enclosed area doing area of effect spells :)
He won't have an animal companion though. I'm not very familiar with running Druids. Does a Druid get an alternate ability if he chooses not to have an animal companion? I figure there must be something like that from a sourcebook.
