So as not to hijack the thread Nebulous is using for his PotA campaign, I'll put this here...It's just an amusing anecdote from today's game: The party (7th level) entered the Black Earth Temple today after the earth cultists tried to assassinate them in Red Larch and then (when that failed) destroyed the town with a devastation orb. During the fight with the gargoyles at the chasm the warlock used shatter (and the other party members laughed "knock knock! Now everyone knows we're here!") So I started planning out how the denizens around room B3 might be preparing a defense. But the elf wizard has the spider staff. He scouted the other half of the chasm and spotted the two openings. So he cast spider climb on everyone and they all went for the large opening to area 21...I rolled to see if Marlos and his shadow demon heard the shatter spell...they did and decided Marlos was watching the party from the arrow slit in area B22... But before they got there I had them make perception checks to notice the arrow slit. The dwarf cleric noticed it. No one wanted to scout it so the wizard said he would sneak over, climb above it and look in...I said: "You look into the slit and see a human standing there looking right back at you. He grins at you, his eyes begin to glow and his hair rises up as if it is made of writhing snakes. Make a Con save." ...and I showed him the picture of Marlos in chapter 7. He rolled a 13. So now he is restrained and has to make a save at the end of his next turn. And that is where we ended...with the wizard clinging to the side of the chasm, possibly turning to stone. Now I'm going to have to decide how do the other denizens react when they hear fighting off towards Marlos's lair. I think some of them will start making their way to the fight. This is going to be interest... Fortunately the party has with them a dwarven priest that was making a pilgrimage to the Vale of Dancing Waters when Red Larch was destroyed. He agreed to accompany the party and has been helping them out by absorbing some damage and healing a bit. I'm going to make him a full fledged cleric so if the wizard fails his next save, the player has a character for next session. It's going to be a long two weeks until our next game...
