A computer world campaign

Hey all, I am about to start setting up my campaign called Dataworld that is simialr in the sense to Tron and Reboot, more towards Tron. The idea is you are programs, software or AI that have adventures inside a computer world. I know this is D20 game out called Virtual but there were problems I did not like about that product.

The dilemma I am having is the type of characters or archetypes they will be. I know I want the characters to play the actual programs but I need what type of computers programs are out now the I could have the players play. Like Tron was security program or player Jack wants a different type program but what type program does I allow him to play?

Any suggestions? Thanks

Human networking (e.g. MSN Messenger)
Anti-virus (a-la the Tron security prog)
Multimedia (WinAmp et al)
Game (take your pick, sounds like fun developing characters based on different game types e.g. FPS, MMO, CRPG, etc.)
Search Engine (e.g. Google)

...should get you going!

I suggest you make the first adventure a bug hunt. Then have a cataclysmic patch that nerfs their abilities. For plot arc, the PCs can be fighting to save the virtual world from the prophecy that there will come a virtual world 2.0 with which they will not be compatible.

Alternatively, you could grab a copy of Permutation City by Greg Egan from your local library.

So you want something like 'Search-Engine' Sages who get Divinition like abilities to access all kinds of information and 'find' stuff?
