[QUOTE="pawsplay, post: 5009107, member: 15538"] In addition to the useful things Celebrim said above about gaming and religion, I think it should be pointed out that that both Tolkien and Lewis used fantasy as a way of exploring moral themes, what they felt were Christian themes, without engaging in commentary on the religious texts (Lewis did also write some religious commentaries, of course). If the new player is not already familiar with Narnia and Middle-Earth, somehow, it might be worthwhile to poll her about her thoughts on that style of fantasy. Many if not most fantasy settings have a creator or divine principle at their heart, referencing not only Christian theology but the cultural inheritance of Plato as well as similar ideas that appear in other religious sytems such as Hinduism. The D&D Immortals set, the gold box, had this as an explicit element, as does the mystical world presented in DC's comic book universe. However, some players still have trouble getting over the hurdle of having their PCs worship (non-infinite) deities of good alignment. I think it's perfectly reasonable to imagine your PC is a good person who may, in some abstract way, lack salvation. I have met a very, very individuals who insisted on the Biblical God being present in their games. Ultimately, this has led to them mostly not playing in other people's D&D games. I have also known a couple of cases where a player did not want God in their games, because the player was considered they might act in a blasphemous fashion. In any case, the bottom line is to be flexible and respectful, while also being clear about what is acceptable and desirable in the eyes of the existing group members. I think in some cases very religious players may feel insecure expressing their beliefs in certain ways around others who may or may not share them, which is a very understandable fear that should be addressed.
