With the release of 3.5 I'm starting a new campaign, I've got 2 players that know the 3.0 D20 mechanic and 3 "noobs"(1 that played 2.0). So I wanted something that has..

a way to teach game mechanics(skills & DC etc.)
interduce "role play vs. Roll Play"
Interduction to the campaign world
interaction between the players themselves in a light hearted way
So I came up with the Trade Fair, every spring after the annual floods subside and trade resumes up and down the river a "Hireing Fair" is held. The fair is both a celebration for Sophia the river Goddess and a way for the loggers and rivermen to hire crews and guards. Skill Tests An opsticle course useing the skills Climbing, Balance and the other skills needed by rivermen, this is more a way to seperate the terminal clumsy, lame & lazy from the others. All the DCs are on the low side between 10 and 15 with the finale a 20 at the most, as long as you TRY to complete the course you're hired in some compatcity. A Spell caster or other PC who is "to good" to climb a ratline and walk a beam might be hired but s/he'll be trainie cook during the passage. Combat Test I'll use the tourny rules from the Dragon unless I can find a copy of Fairs,Taverns & Tournyments somewhere. Archery a set distances and the List( melee with blunted weapons) are the main tests here. Roleplay opertunities All over the place from the hopefully bosses to the food vendors and others. That is the main reason for this to get the players into charactor. Side Adventures

A crooked game: A concessioneer or more is running a crooked game of chance, toss copper pieces into a glass plate to win a prize but the plate is angled so the CP will always bounce out.
Robbery ! The fairs proceeds or the temples poor box is taken, the PCs are wrongly accusted.
Uninvited guests Goblins stage a raid to break up the festivle
Murder most foul: A body is found horrible slashed, it's a harbringer of things to come and the murders follow the PCs down the river.
Mage Duel : Two of the local mid level Wizards decide to have a (hopefully) non lethal mage duel to settle a dispute. Something goes wrong....
So any suggestions on games etc. ? And if y'all have any good NPC ideas please help me out !
