A frustrating encounter with real thieves (long post)

A car coming down the streeet almost hit one of them as they jumped into either side of a U-haul truck parked along the sidewalk and took off.

Robbers used a rented truck? (I assume you rent U-Hauls...)

I'll second the Jester's saying.

I'd say your lucky you didn't try and take it in to your own hands anymore than you did. What if you had pushed one of down the stairs and he had broken his neck and died? You would be up for jail time. Or he couldve pulled a knife/gun and killed you.

Is it really worth risking your own life or freedom for possessions?

Bah! Don't listen to the naysayers. While I agree in general that one's life shouldn't be risked (or spent) for mere possessions, there's no shame in trying to do something in the aid of a friend, or neighbor. And though it was stuff, it undoubtedly meant something to the person that did own it, and I commend you for trying to do something genuinely Good for that person.
