A breathtaker, or duskblooms as others call them, appears as a fist sized tuft of whispy folds of shadow with veins of an even darker, richer black running all through it. The breathtaker is partially plant, partially fungus, and seems to even have ooze-like qualities to it, possessing a ponderous mobility.
Breathtakers have a type of 'shadowsynthesis', gaining energy from shade and darkness. Though they can tolerate normal ammounts of carbon dioxide in the air, they are always on the prowl for a richer source. In doing so they become a dangerous menace, flowing onto sleeping creatures and covering their mouth so as to get a every last whiff of their exhalations.
These creatures hail from the Plane of Shadow and only rarely manage to leave their home.
Combat:
Breathtakers slowly climb upon the sleeping form of beings with a touch so soft it would hardly be noticed while awake. It then simply spreads itself out across the breathing orifice. If attacked or even disturbed it immediately flees using its Shadow Body, and once having used it for the night does not attempt to draw breath till the next dusk.
While upon the the face the creature is treated as a worn object.
Draw Breath (Ex):
A breathtaker can cover over the mouth and nostrils of most creatures Large or smaller if the orifices are close together like in most humanoids and animals. It can only do this if the victim is asleep, unconscious from damage, or when in any way considered helpless.
When a breathtaker covers the mouth of its victim it takes only the carbon dioxide that is expelled, puffing out slightly to release the oxygen. While overtop of the the mouth the victim cannot draw in another breath, though it continues to exhale its waste gasses as they form within the body, which the breathtaker eagerly accepts. The victim is considered to suffocating as if drowning.
The most insidious aspect of this is that without the buildup of these gasses in the bloodstream the victim does not feel themselves suffocating. They can quite easily suffocate to death and none ever have any indication of the reason. Once the victim dies the breathtaker may leave or seek out another nearby victim, depending on its needs. Those whom try to remove it may feel only a delicate, soft softness like that of a flower petal before it uses its Shadow Body ability.
Sense Exhalation (Ex):
A breathtaker can detect the slight change in atmosphere from a breathing creature within 60 ft. It cannot see the creature exhaling, but only the breath itself, and so seeks to cover over the source.
Shadow Body (Ps):
For one minute per night a breathtaker can turn into living shadow, blending perrfectly into any other shadow and vanishing in darkness. It can discontinue this ability at will, but can only use it up to a collective total of one minute. While using this abilitity it can move at its normal speed, on any surface, including walls and ceilings, as well as across the surfaces of liquids - even up the face of a waterfall. While in its shadow body, its gain damage reduction 10/magic and darkvision out to 60 feet. It becomes immune to extra damage from critical hits, ability damage, disease, drowning, and poison. It takes only half damage from acid, electricity, and fire of all kinds.
While shadowed it can be detected by powers that read thoughts, life, or presences (including true seeing).
It cannot harm anyone physically (such as taking breath). If the breathtaker remains in a shadowed area, it gets a +15 bonus on its Hide check to remain unnoticed.
Sensitivity to Light:
Breathtakers shuns illumination at all costs, and takes maximum damage from any spell that produces damaging light.
Skills: A breathtaker's natural coloration gives it a +6 to hide checks, and it also gains a +12 racial bonus on move silently checks.
