Preliminary thoughts on martial controllers: The reach guy is obvious, and the framework is there to bulid on, should be straightforward. Knife Thrower. Take the rogue's more controllery powers, and build from there. Short to mid range control, mobile character, lots of slowing, confusing, and damaging multiple opponents. Basically, take the control striker and drop the striker features and replace with stronger control. Trickster. Similar to knife thrower in some ways, but closer to the controller defender in others. Marks targets by Taunting them, but is difficult to actually get to, uses acrobatic feats, taunts, misdirection, and other dirty tricks to cause enemies to waste their actions, while hurting themselves and/or putting themselves in harm's way. Bombardier. Like it says on the tin. This guy throws bombs. Don't like non magical bombs in your dnd, don't use this class. Also trap-style stuff, probably. Long ago I had started working on a set of poisons for the Executioner that would make the class play like a controller, including some encounter power options you could take instead of Assassin's Strike. I think there is plenty of room for a poisoner controller. Also of note: Look at the fighter. Imagine the existing 4e phb fighter, but with powers centered around control, and the ability to mark more than one enemy at a time. That is a controller.
