500 years or so ago, IMC, there was a human-centric empire. The elves had gone mostly into hiding. One elf, a bard, became the guardian and protector of a magical passage that connected the hidden elvish land with the human material plane. This connection was necessary for the survival of both "planes" for lack of a more exact term, although I don't use the same concepts in my world. Eventually this elvish bard fell in love, then lost his beloved, and lived out his life in grief, and then, as the empire collapsed, and the elves emerged from hiding and to some extent rejoined the material world, his need to act as a guardian faded, and he died. However, his magical manor house remained behind. And, his spirit remains in the house, unable to find its true elvish "death" because he still longs for his missing beloved.
I want to have my PCs find this manor house. Or the ruins of it, or the ghostly spirit of the house on the night of the full moon, or something similar. Not quite sure what I want, really!
I want them to be able to somehow interact with the bard; it could be his modern day ghost, or it could be some version of himself from the past, either trapped in an endless loop and not realizing he's dead, or even going back in time somehow to briefly interact with his living self (or some combination).
I would like them to perform some quest for the ghost to lay his spirit to rest, so he can pass on, in the way elven spirits do. It makes sense that the quest would be in some way connected with his lost beloved, but it doesn't HAVE to be. What would you do with this rough idea for a plot?
