I know I'm gonna get wierd looks for this, but does anyone here remember Disney's Gummy Bears? Don't be fooled... those Gummies were actually 3E Gnomes in bearskins. Now, I'm serious: They're a race of secluded creatures who live in harmony with nature, living in a home burrowed underneath a tree, constructed so as not to interfere with the tree's natural growth. They have technical and engineering skills ahead of everyone else in an otherwise medieval world, coupled with magical knowledge of a powerful nature. They have large, powerful enemies, but battle them using cunning and courage, with trickery being their weapon of choice. Heck, they even seem to have a taste for pranks, as at one time, it's shown that some of their ancestors built a "Ogre God" to trick the Ogres into worshipping and leave the Gummies alone. Now, I ask you... does that not sound like a 3rd Edition Gnome or not? It does to me, so you can be sure that in my campaigns, Gnomes are going to be living in somewhat secluded communities in hidden glens, with cleverly constructed houses that actually blend in with the hills and trees. They have clockwork devices way ahead of the times, built and used in ways that don't interfere too badly with nature, and they experiment in various magics. Oh, and the "Gnomes as Fey" stuff? Chalk it up to another bit of Human Misunderstanding, just as they sometimes confuse Dwarves and Gnomes, think that Elves are Immortal Fairy Lords, believe Orcs are Goblinoids, and assume that Halflings are a pygmy race of humanity. But then, your mileage may vary.
