A goblins dying breath.

Lord Ben

First Post
Okay, yesterday we had a fight involving a few elite goblins (war2 to adp8) and in the end of the battle there was a 3rd level rogue left with 5 PC's. 4 of the PC's were next to the rogue in various spots. Any route he fled by would provoke at least 2 AO's on a double move, 4 on a full run. The 4 PC's all had 7 or less HP (5th level) due to the adept and a well placed lightning bolt. One PC had 1hp left with a low AC. I probably could have killed him but definately would have died. Running would give me a 10% chance of living since there was a fighter and the adept in the same room that were held and paralyzed so the PC's would have stayed to coup de grac.

What do your NPC's do with their last breath? Take out the PC, run for it, et?

That's exactly what a Goblin's supposed to do: run and leave his friends behind to die.

Hobgoblins die fighting. Goblins run as soon as they think the enemy can fight back.

hmmm

I'd say he grovels on the floor and begs for mercy. He then tells them about a hidden treaure soewhere and tries to lead them into a deathtrap. Of course, my pc's would never fall for this anymore....boo.

Free Action: 5ft step to a slightly better position. Crouch and grin wickedly at the bleeding mage.

Free action: Say "Yew all drop them stickers or yer friend dies!".

Standard action: Ready an attack against the 1hp PC if anyone does anything other than drop their weapons.

(Following rounds: keep threatening until Hold spell wears off of allies.)

Kill... Run... Tumble ?!... SURRENDER.. take hostage

Well it depends a little on what the objective of attacking the PCs was ... if they have a very mean boss that ordered the attack and hates "failure" I would choose to kill the PC.

If it was just a raid then run I would.

This so called rogue couldnt tumble out ? He could hold the 1hp PC at knife point demanding truce or even surrender.

I like all of the answers supplied thus far. In my case, I would have attempted to tumble safely out of harm's way and lived to plan an ambush another day ;).

Exactly, Quickbeam. I love recurring characters. And baddies with vendettas are among the best.

Or, if you wanted, you could have him engage in a new action that we developed in our game:

Cry Like a Little Girl - Full round action which provokes an attack of opportunity.

In this case tumbling while doing a double move is what he attempted. I rolled a 4 and failed the tumble check and died.

The case has come up numerous times before with non-rogues and I didn't know how most people played the NPC's.

Go for survival, no matter how slim the chance?
You're more then likely going to die so take someone with you?
Surrender?
Play dead? (What's the DC on that?)
