A great game, nice reward

Last night was my bi-weekly 4th edition Shadowrun game. It isn't typical Shadowrun in that my GM customized the world a bit so it is a very unique, but very fun game.

I am playing a pansy, corporate boy technomancer who hired a bodyguard to keep him safe since his wife doesn't know what he does in his free time. Well, she thinks he does 'computer' work on a freelance basis. Overall, my character is of a very good nature, he may be a pansy, but he is unlike a lot in the world because he has a conscious about things.

Last nights game was extremely cinematic. The entire group at some point in the game did something awesome and we managed to live through what should have been a TPK. We continually surprise my GM with our ability to think our way through situations and apply unique tactics. In the end, we were trying to prevent a fallen angel from coming back to full power. He had been in a resting, coma-like state for 300 years, but an artifact changed that. When he was taken to his resting place (top of Sears Tower in Chicago) after his fall, his sword was left at the site of the fall. (near a very toxic Lake Michigan) When we had arrived back in Chicago from the wastelands, I went towards the sword. (no idea what made me do it, but did) The rest of the group went to see the fallen angel. As a security measure, we always route everyone's comlinks through mine since as a technomancer I have the best firewall. I knew what was going on, could see and hear. When the confrontation started to go bad and battle began, I grabbed the sword. It was a holy sword, so it burned me terribly, but I held on. (thankfully GM's dice were rolling terriblly :) ) After the next round, he tried to call his sword to him, and I had to make my strength + willpower check (I only have a strength of 2). I managed to hold onto it, while it continues to burn me. I turn towards Lake Michigan. It is mega toxic, but the blade is flaming...water, no matter the toxicity, should hopefully put flame out. I know that if I let go of the blade, the fallen Angel will be able to get his blade, so I immerse myself in the water. I realise this is my death, but all my comrads will surely die if he gets his powerful weapon to use against them. Even though noone in the present day (game-time that is) believes in the true gods, my character becomes suddenly pius, and says a prayer (basically stating that he is sacrifing himself so the sword stays out of the hands of the fallen angel) as he enters Lake Michigan and he gets completely engulfed in flame as all the toxic water errupts in flame. The GM goes to the rest of the group.

FWD to end of game. My GM wanted to wrap up the game with a great cinematic moment. My bodygaurd had run to Lake Michigan as soon as possible, especially when I had dropped off the radar and people weren't having their commincation going throuh my commlink any longer. My bodyguard arrived to see the lake had become crystal clear. It was completely purified of all its' toxins. My bodygaurd dropped down and yelled that sad yell at finding my charred/melted skin to clothing floating around, only to look up and see me coming out of the lake with fresh skin, and still holding the sword, but this time it wasn't burning me. It was actually creating a bluish light dancing around me. Apparently my sacrifice, and the last minute prayer I made to a god that I didn't know really existed saved me.

The blade has now become a soul blade that will feed on evil souls. It will grant me 4 physical adept, and will cost me 12 Karma to permantly bond it to me. These blades in our game world are super super rare and are awesome to have. While, as a player this a really awesome thing. I earned it through my actions. The other option is to give it to the Lake until another worthy person comes along. Keeping the blade something that would not be part of my character, but on the other side I have had a completely life alterring event happen. I am inclined to keep the blade, but it doesn't feel right. My GM is going to fill me in on what happened to me in the time between me thinking I was dead, and the time I came out of the water with the blade.

Would you keep the blade?

Keep the soul blade. The purification of the toxic lake, in addition to being a thankyou boon on behalf of the locals, was obviously a "hint" that just as the Diety removed the toxins from the polluted waters, so did it expunged the past sins/etc from your own flesh. Your actions brought you to Its attention and thus proven yourself emotionally/spiritually capable of the self-sacrifice needed to safe-guard the now purified blade for some future event where you will no doubt -NEED- the blade's abilties to act on Its behalf in your newly assigned role as Its representaive (ie: pawn).

You must be a GM. :)

I think I am going to keep it, but for some reason feel guilty about it. My GM is great at using things like this as plot devices though. My actions were completely unexpected, but he will use it in the future. I think I will have a new purpose in game. Probably likely to be spreading the word of the creator's existence, and being the first known mortal contact in at least 300 years. Being a technomancer will be a great past time...
