A few peasant dishes back then are now expensive.

Ye Olde Starving peasant thing is mostly a myth except in times of famine etc. I think they ate an average of 4000 calories a day.

Some of those hippie organic type shops here also have spelt flour which was used in Roman times and there are recipes for Roman and Medieval food in various places. One lady at university made a poundcake which had a pound of butter in it and 12 eggs (no baking soda/powder).
