So this guy I know joins my game. Never played D&D. I need to introduce his character to the others etc. He decides he want to play a drunken master Monk. I say fair enough. I come up with this story that he was a senior acolyte in a temple that was attacked by squidmen in the Yellow City (which is at war with said squidmen, and their Kraken masters). He's the sole survivor (he was sent to get help), save a cowardly servant who ran away. The rulers of the city are concerned - why was this temple attacked? They have guards, but they ask the party to go live at the now near empty temple to relieve the guards and investigate. The party shows up. The monk is drunk, and ask them if they have seen the chicken. Apparently, the chicken is the last eyewitness to the squidmen attack. The party doesn't know. I (deciding to sort of go with this but not wanting to derail the campaign), have the cowardly servant remind the monk that they ate the chicken last night. The party begin to look for the bones to cast speak with dead. Alas, the bones were tossed in the river. So the "real" adventure start. Mother rust (a witch in a cloak of rusted iron plates) has stolen something from the party during the move - an altar to the god of misplaced memories, an altar the party always forgets about for some reason. The party summons the guards to watch the temple, and give chase, monk in tow, into a dark forest. They are ambushed by intelligent spiders, and the monk charges, demanding they tell him where the chicken is. Later on, they meet an obstacle (a large lake) and the monk decides to scout ahead using his winged boots to fly over the lake (randomly rolled item given to the new player). So I have all the other players do a knowledge Nature check. I then inform them that the wings really look like chicken wings.... I think the guy's a keeper :D
