A PrC Question

Say (for example) that in your campaign you create a PrC called The Royal Guard. One of your players works towards joining that majestic order, but when he gets there and joins the Royal Guard in game, should the player/character HAVE to take at least 1 level in that class?

I guess that if you have a PrC for a specific organization, then full-fledged members of that organization should have at least a level in that PrC. Maybe, until he gets the level, he is just a traineé - a member, but without important duties or benefits.

I agree with Zappo. The PC can be associated with the organisation and a second class member (not a full membership)
Or think of a squire before he becomes a knight.

Just my 2 cents

It depends on how you sewe the Royal Gaurd and what is required to join their ranks. One might have to have levels in the class to join, you could actually have that as a first level ability (membership to royal gaurd). Perhaps they also let others in but require stricter rules or higher dues.

I would check out the guildcraft rules to see if the Royal Guard would make a better guild than PrC. I like them for organizations that you want to have both an in game and metagame cost but aren't worth the full cost of a PrC.

I would say that if he takes the PrC he is focused on their syle of training, otherwise he would prefer to do things his own way. Though by not taking the PrC could seriously limit him in rank, unless his regular class is similar.
