D&D 3E/3.5 A question about Regeneration in 3.5

In 2e my Ranger was able to get a 20 Constitution and that gives you the ability to regenerate 1 hp per hour.

When we converted to 3.5 my DM felt that regeneration was part of my character's personality so he said that I would retain regeneration but it would function as a ring of regeneration. So now I regenerate hitpoints based on character level.

My concern is that the Ring of Regeneration does not actually give you the Regeneration quality, so does that mean I take all damage normally and not convert it to non-lethal damage?

That is correct since that is what the ring says it does and the fact that its close enough to what your previous form of "regeneration" was like. Sounds like you have kind DM.

Thanks for your timely response and that is what I thought. I guess you are right. I didn't actually want to keep the regeneration since it didn't convert. I was going to use the feat Rapid Metabolism from the Expanded Psionics Handbook to give him the ability to heal faster than the rest of the party.

The primary issue with a DM allowing you to carry over regeneration is balance. In 2e you gained this ability to give the game balance and greatly reward high statistics. In 3.5e there are other rule systems and other balance issues balancing out the game. If you truly believe it is an integral part of your character to have this ability, or you simply wish to have it because it's a good ability you could make a case with your DM. If you address the primary problem with carrying it over, balance, perhaps by giving up abilities or some other ability feature of 3.5e I'm sure you could have an argument for it at least.

Now of course, this is for the added bonus of all damage being non-lethal. For the simple hit point regenerative ability, yes, you have a nice DM. Just don't use it in a way that'll make him regret his decision later, or he'll be less inclined to be nice to you. :)

20 Con was closer to 3.5 fast heal back then I thought: you didn't actually have Regen, you just healed.
