Most of the hard right of the era didn't accept it as mental illness, but simply as emblematic of either demonic possession or simple moral failure. In most states, the current DSM is a legal standard, as well - if the DSM lists it as&nbsp; a mental illness, so does the state. Now, Transgenderism was, in the 80's, generally considered a mental illness as well - an was such in the DSM III, III-R, and IV.
