A Return to Traveller

Traveller was one of those games I spent a lot of time on in high school and early college, not so much playing it although there was some of that but playing around with character and ship creation. Eventually, I drifted from it dissatisfied with how it played: it was a little too "realistic" for my tastes at the time. I wanted frequent combat and never felt the system was all that well suited for it. Or put another way, my level of ref'ing and gaming required combat to carry it and that was hard to do in the Traveller system if you wanted your PCs to live a while ;)

There my opinion of Traveller sat for many years and I finally gave away my 1980s era books a few years ago. But my son is just about 13 and showing a strong interest in hard-science roleplaying games. I had the Star Wars d20 book kicking around as well as the Firefly RPG but he didn't care for those. He's always been one to draw detailed ship plans (like ol' dad that way) and I got to thinking Traveller might be the game system for him.

So I bought some of the Mongoose publishing books and he is just starting to dig through it now. So far it's a big hit and even if he never plays or refs it much, seems like a good acquisition. Lots of deck plans, even more than in the old days although the old staples are still there which is nice. The editing is, unfortunately, not so good but that actually brings back some of the nostalgia as well: a lot of stuff published in the late 70s and early 80s was not so well edited either.

Anyway, it's been fun looking through the material. It certainly brings back memories and these days I don't find a bloody combat system quite so off putting, having learned how to carry a campaign without so much combat over the years. Might even give it a go between D&D campaigns, especially if some of my group remains on the fence about 4E.

Any old time Traveller players giving it a new look? Any folks, new or old, using Mongoose Traveller want to comment on it? It seems a lot like the 80s edition but I missed some of the intermediate editions (except for making the mistake of buying the version with the super-virus in the setting- ugh).

Old time Traveller player here- not hardcore, but ran a couple campaigns BITD between D&D or RQ sessions. Always loved the game, but my players just preferred Fantasy or "modern" RPGs like Espionage, Justice, Inc.,Top Secret etc.

I just purchased the Traveller core LBB during the Mongoose sale- I sold all my Traveller books many moons ago, but have been jonesing to run another game of it the past couple of years. I understand the Mongoose version is pretty faithful to the original so I decided to pick it up.
 



Still using the old Books and Supplements here, as I have 'em. The Far Future Enterprises reprints and/or CD might deliver more "bang for buck" for some people than the Mongoose version, but I would consider the latter if I were in the market.

The Mongoose products I have seen do not fit the old bill of LITTLE (i.e., digest sized) Black Books, so I wonder what the "L" is supposed to stand for there.

Don't they have a little book format out? I like the big books myself and stayed away from the little format but I saw them listed. I remember the old books being at the mercy of the staples and falling apart easily.

I'm sure these came out in various add-ons by various publishers but the basic books and early supplements have tons of starship plans, something I like compared to the old edition. They have all the old favorites like Kinunir and Gazelle and even Azhanti High Lightning (those deck plans are the one old travel thing I did not ditch; they are priceless and at 15mm figure scale).

If I'd been smart enough to keep my old books we would have used those but I actually prefer the Mongoose version from what I've seen so far. Rolled up a naval officer and a scout today :D As before, have fun just rolling up characters.
 


Just finished running a MongTrav campaign two weeks ago, I think, for a bunch of players used to D&D. It was a good time; I'd played Traveller d20 before, but Mongoose was much better done. And no, we didn't play with Iron Man chargen... but we did have players rolling up 'backup' characters in their free time, which was entertaining.

I've never touched Traveller, but the quote above represents nearly all conversations about the game I have ever read or participated in. It should be on the back of the book - "This is the game you will spend many hours on never playing!"
