As someone who has used frightened very often in combat I generally agree with this. The limits on mobility are a big deal, and while more enemies with Ranged attacks in 2024 MM may mitigate that some, that book is not out yet and I think it is unlikely ranged attacks are going to be generally as effective for monsters as melee attacks even when it comes out. It is not true to state it only stops people if the battle field is 20 foot wide. An enemy can't get closer to you at all and remains frightened until the end of your next turn. Even if the battlefield is 50 or 100 feet wide an enemy has extremely limited movement. This affects them two ways - making them arc around you using extra movement and it means they need a very large area to move around you. It may be counterintuitive, but you actually put a bigger restriction on their movement by getting further away from them. For example, if you frighten an enemy 10 foot in front of you and then back up 30 feet from them, putting them 40 feet from you; this makes an area 5025 square feet that they can not enter on their turn. It will take 125 movement to go around you and get to the other side of you and if you are standing in the center of a room, that room must be at least 80 foot wide (or 45 foot tall) for them to do it at all. It is essentially an 80 foot wide wall you are putting in the middle of the battlefield.
