D&D 5E Actual play experience with 5e XP system - does speed of progression change at 11th level?

S'mon

Legend
According to this http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?367079-5e-XP-Chart-Progression-Question it takes 6 encounters/level in tier 1, 15 encounters/level in tier 2, 10
encounters/level 11-20. I've certainly seen how progression slows from levels 1-4 to 5-10,
but I was wondering if people with actual play experience find that the speed of levelling does increase after 10th? Or does eg fighting more lower level foes keep it about the same?

My tabletop 5e Runelords/Shattered PCs are currently 7th level and levelling about every 5 sessions, which I like. I'm a bit concerned they could be levelling every 3 sessions after 10th if I don't tweak the system, and that this might feel too quick. Tweaks would probably be to lower non-combat awards and use mostly enemies below party CR. What's your experience?

Overall I'm not a fan of the speed of advancement here in 5e. I think it's too fast. Now admittedly my favorite edition is 1e.... And you'll have several whole adventures between many lvs there....

That said? I'm the DM. How much xp I hand out per session is 100% up to me. No matter what the books or charts say.
So if I decide that 5 sessions is the right speed? Then you'll earn 1/5th of the needed xp each week - no matter what you actually fight*.

(*assuming reasonable adventuring action. You'd have to specifically do something non-xp worthy not to get a weeks worth of xp - such as spending the session shopping for toothpaste {it happened, fun session just not worth much xp. Party got it over the next two weeks}

My group is leveling about every 2-3 sessions (about 4 hours each), but I'm a terrible example. I'm running Against the Giants without changing the total number of enemies. For example, three sessions ago, they fought (in total) something like 14 Ogres, 10 Frost Giants, 6 Ice Toads, and 2 Adult White Dragons. Even with a 7 character party (5 PCs, 2 NPCs), this leveled them from nearly the beginning of level 11 to level 12. Two sessions later, they'll level to 13 once they long rest.

Was levelling slower at 5-10 than 11-13?

Leveling is more or less the same throughout the game.
My players went up to level 15 and leveling required about the same amount of time from level to level (save the first 3) and that was the expected rate of advancement in the DMG. So no problems. Monster are giving a lot more exp the higher the players are. So it should be ok.

On the side note, I much prefer a slower advancement as we had in 1ed. But in today's standard it would not be appreciated.

I've noticed in my game that we've been playing for about a year, barring about a 2 month hiatus due to rl issues for everyone that in about 10 months we've all levelled from 1 to 12 now. Our characters are at slightly varying xp values since some of us didn't start at the same time in the beginning. But we're so close to each other that it's a number of 100's to maybe a 1000 or so between levels. We level about every 5 to 6 ish encounters per level but I use the word "encounters" loosely cause it's not all combat. We get xp from other sources as well such as good RP, clever solutions to problems, diplomacy etc.

I will say that low levels did take a while to get through, later levels have been coming fast after 10 or so from what I've seen.

I used to think my leveling preferences were just bc I was only a player, and then I started DMing, and holy crow, do I hate the party leveling slower than once every 4 sessions. I wish the DMG let me be lazy, and just gave us multiple XP tables for different rates.

I've ran a game up to level 19.

Levelling is MUCH faster from 11-16. Easily noticeable. Slows down after that though.

As a player I also find levelling quite slow level 4-11.

The game I'm running just got to that level—the characters are 11th level I have noticed that they seem to be approaching 12th a faster than they did from 10th to 11th. We'll see as it goes after that.
