AD&D Combat & Tactics Critical Hit System II

Is there a reason why it would be a bad idea to adjust it for 3.5? Yes, the players will likely be on the brunt of most attacks but it would take a Save Vs Death (or, perhaps, Fortitude Save) to get the colorful effects. It's appealing to me because one can be descriptive with combat, and a bit gory as well. What say you?

I'm going to unleash this on my game tommorow night. I saw a variant which suggested when one does damage that brings the targets HPs to 50% or lower with a crit to use a crit table, which would make it more rarer.

Let us know how it works out! I am eager to try a more "colorful" crit system myself. I have always been partial to the Rolemaster crit system, but it just too darn lethal for D&D, in any edition.
