My first attempt at a Poll on this site...so hopefully I get this down correctly. There have been some threads speculating about the creation of a 5th edition...perhaps to be due out some time in the near future. Invariably this leads to those complaining that if the release was next year...or even this year, it is far too soon. They state that such a move would destroy D&D (though I think the same has been stated about earlier releases of various editions). Many of you realize that workers at WotC have been split into different groups which are most likely working on different projects. This could be simply a division of D&D boardgame products vs. D&D RPG products...OR it could be more symbolic of them working on another RPG...OR even working on a new edition whilst a few remain to work on the older 4e edition. Taking the slant that there are those working on a new edition, what would you rather see? Instead of releasing a new edition per se, they continue to leave Essentials in the stores. 4e continues to be supported on DDi. Instead of a new edition, a concurrent edition is released. This edition is called, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. 4e Essentials is considered a different line, much like BECMI (Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, Immortal) were a different line from AD&D during the TSR years. The new AD&D may or may not be similar to 4e. It would have different options, and perhaps more complexity in certain areas. It may require something from 3.X editions which would be system mastery. This mastery may include some ideas from recent products including cards and other areas...OR it could go back to a more old school approach. This would also be supported by DDi. Even if the new AD&D got more traction and a majority of DDi went over to it's support, you could always have at least one article in Dragon or Dungeon dedicated to simply basic 4e D&D. Would this upset you, or would you call it the end of the world? What would it need in it to attract you to it, especially the players who are NOT playing 4e? What would you sink money into with it? Would this be an acceptable approach? On the otherhand, what if 5e was released. It was going into print and to be out next year. However 4e will still be strictly supported via DDi offerings. It will remain supported by the 4e team for the next 2-3 years at a minimum. You will get all the nice articles that you would see via books, but they would be released in electronic format instead. You can pick and choose what you want and only download which articles you would use. 5e would be very similar in some ways to the new AD&D listed above with some differences. It would eventually supplant 4e. In addition, it would not really cater to the older gamers at all, not even in name. It would take many of the most recent innovations in RPG's seen in Gamma World, the Fortune Cards, and other games to create the newest WotC D&D version yet. It would also be very heavily supported electronically with DDi and new electronic tools. These tools are being worked on much more heavily and tested then the smaller team working on 4e...to ensure that this launch has a better quality launch then the initial 4e DDi launch. Would this drive you away or be an acceptable approach? Final options, instead of any new release, simply release the older editions. Perhaps a new release of AD&D 1e, or even the BECMI version of D&D in electronic format...perhaps even a hardcopy format on a collectible basis (or mass market, whichever you think is best). Would this drive you away or be an acceptable approach? Or of course you could say...none of these fool...who do you think I am...Richie Rich!? Your thoughts...and now hopefully I can figure out how to get this poll thing to work.
