I was just on my way over to the publisher forum to ask this very question...

I am looking forwards to this as well. i just picked up three hardcovers from the sceince fiction book club that contain the first nine of Edgar rive burroughs Mars novels in anticipation for Adamant's RPG book.

I have been checking the Adamant site almost daily, but no dice yet...

GMS's blog has been quiet for a few days (which is unusual for him; it's one of the more interesting blogs around, imho). If I had to guess, given that he's normally on these boards pretty actively, I'd say he's on vacation or otherwise inaccessible.

I believe he last said (prior to the board wipeout) that he was waiting on the printing that had been delayed to do a universal rollout and that it would be out some time this month.

There's a reason I waited until today to ask this question...

I'm back from vacation.

I'm going to be updating the Adamant blog today with the following information:

Due to the actions of another publisher (and I'm not naming names, so don't ask), I have been contacted by the General Counsel for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. -- this publisher sent them a copy of the preview, and they're concerned about the similarities to the Burroughs works -- which are only Public Domain in the US.

I am currently attempting to assure them that the similarities are only to things which are common to the Planetary Romance genre as a whole, and present in the works of of Jack Vance, Lin Carter, Michael Moorcock, Leigh Brackett, and dozens of other authors as well. The rights of the Burroughs estate have not been, and will not be, violated -- even on those works which have been afforded public domain status in the US (A Princess Of Mars, Gods Of Mars, Warlord of Mars, Thuvia; Maid Of Mars, and The Chessmen Of Mars, specifically).

Adamant preferred to create our own original setting in the style of the dozens of existing works in the Planetary Romance genre, rather than any single author.

The problem here is this -- I am 100% sure of our legal standing...however, if ERB Inc. decides to go to court, Adamant simply cannot afford to fight. So, right now, everything is on hold while I try to assure them that their rights are not being challenged.

Hey, I was right. So, what's my prize? :p

That's disappointing. Of all the publishers to actually worry about this sort of thing and make sure it's properly done, you'd be at the top of the list. Hope it gets worked out quickly and satisfactorily.

Thanks for the updaye, and i will patiently wait.

Here is a thought... Maybe let them know that people are actually buying the Burrough's books because they are excited about the Adamant setting! I have! ... or do they not get royalties from them now in the US. As you can tell I know nothing about this stuff... but I freely admit it!

Ahhh sucky. Good luck with this. I will eagerly await getting my hardcover with profound patience... or at least a modicum of patience.

We were so close i could smell the red sands...
