Adventure review: Cairn of the Winter King

Adventurer
I know that the Reavers of Harkenwold adventure from the Dungeon Master's Kit has gathered a fair amount of interest here on EN World, so I thought the community might also be interested in my review of the Cairn of the Winter King adventure from Monster Vault.

I wrote both a critical review (brief) and a narrative review (longer). Overall, I liked the adventure and my particular little party of three PCs played by my wife, her brother, and his wife had a great time. Their player types are all really "Slayers" - they like to kill monsters and don't care much about story and character development.

If you want an adventure that lets you kill monsters in a dungeon-exploration environment, you'll like Cairn of the Winter King. If you're looking for depth of story after the excellent Reavers of Harkenwold, you might be disappointed by Cairn.

Nice review, I played this adventure a couple of months back and found it very enjoyable (transposed to eberron) now my charcter is trying to decide if she wants to declare herself Winterqueen, since she ended up with the sceptre and the crown.

Thanks, I'm running a group of combat heavy players through reavers right now, and was trying to determine if I wanted to take them through this adventure too. I think it'll suit them quite nicely.

....however, they are itching to take on the Daggerburg Goblins, which are mentioned in Reavers. One of the character's foster father was killed by goblins and another is a Woodsinger elf, so they have all the reasons to take on the goblins.

My advice: take The Slaying Stone and advance the levels just a bit. Presto! Goblin-controlled ruined city for all your goblin-killing needs!

Funny, you say that, I'm also running that adventure with my other group. I had considered that as an option. But I think my Reavers group wants a more direct conflict with the Goblins. I think they would just walk down the middle of the road and fight every goblin they see.

Heh. Whoops. That was supposed to be my wife's BROTHER and his wife. Yes, my wife's husband would indeed be me, unless she had multiple husbands or something like that (which I'm pretty sure isn't the case).

Thanks! Original post has been edited.
