Adventurers titles

There are nobility titles, from lowest to highest (I might be wrong):

Knight, Noble, Lord, Baron, Viscount, Count, Marquis, Duke, Prince, King, Emperor (based on the italian nobility hierarchy).

Remember back in 1st edition when all classes had titles attached to some (or all) of their levels ? I miss that. For roleplaying purposes, it's not practical to say "Yeah, I'm a 14th level wizard". The wizard doesn't know what level he is.

I'm thinking of a system based on level to attribute titles to adventurers, so this way some measure of their power could be described:

Neophyte (1st)
Specialist-Veteran* (6th)
Expert-Warlord* (12th)
Master (18th)
Arch (24th)
Eternal (30th +)

* when there's two titles for a given level, the second one refers to a warrior class (Ranger, Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin). All other classes of those levels use the first title.

This way, it is possible for a lord to say something like "Herald, find me some adventurers to deal with our dragon problem. Do not bother with neophytes, make sure only experts or more experienced folk answer our call. It is a huge beast indeed...".

How does veteran ranger, expert sorceror, master druid, arch paladin, and eternal monk sound ?

Ahh, it all really depends on the area and the character.

I recently played a Wizard who started his career as a student at the local wizard school (Lv 1 or 2) by the time the campaign ended, he was around Lv 10-11, but he was still a "student" at the school, all be it a senior student.

For adventuring parties, I would expect the lord to say something like "Fetch me an experienced party to deal with the problem.” When the herald goes out to post messages and the PCs reply to them, they will have to provide credentials as to what they have done (if they are not famous enough to already pass that test)

Sometime a character may be a member of a military, and may have a rank associated with that. Wizards could have a standing in the local guild. It’s a good idea to come up with something, but it might not be necessary in all cases.

“I’m a 14th level wizard” could just be “I am a wizard” or perhaps “I am an archmage” (whether they have the prestige class or not)
