Don't take this wrong, this is the first time I can recall hearing about this 'zine. I may have seen it in the past and simply not remembered. This is not a slam, just a personal statement. I believe many others are probably in the same position.

If you are seeking advertisers I would humbly suggest providing information about how many copies go out to "unique" users, etc. Advertising rates are generally based on how many people are actually going to see the advertisement. As an electronic product some are going compare advertising with you with banner ads and such (I am not saying this is fair, just a fact).

Hey Patrick,

First, I am sorry the Poor Gamer's Almanac hasn't gotten your attention until now. Secod, you bring up a number of good points. That is why I included a link to the DEMO in the initial forum post because it answers all of those questions - especially to the point of advertising in an e-zine instead of placing a banner ad (our house ads in previous Poor Gamer's Almanac issues produced more sales than 25,000 to 100,000 banner impressions purchased for RPGNow and EnWorld).

It is all a new concept and that is why our prices are compariably low.

So download the DEMO in the initial post and get the lowdown.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that you are asking someone to download something to decide whether or not to give you money. A lot of people simply aren't going to take that step. Generally, if you want to make a sale you have to go out and convince someone to make a purchase (in your case, advertising in your 'zine) not sit back and wait for them to expend energy to become convinced.

I like what I saw with your 'zine and would love to see it be successful and for you to keep it going. I just don't think you are going to pick up many new advertisers by this method. I would suggest looking up the rpg publishers that you consider your market and directly sending them information about advertising. Don't do this more than once or people will get annoyed by the "spam." Make sure you word your letter carefully and politely, include your DEMO information and possibly a link to download the 'zine. Don't send file attachments or large .pdfs or anything like that.

This requires you to expend the energy to look up the companies, email addresses, etc. Expending that extra energy shows the people you want to advertise with you that you are serious about what you are doing.

Selling advertising in any sort of magazine, whether a large print publication or a small e-zine, is generally a slope that must be climbed and climbed again. I wish you the best of luck.
