The half-dozen I've tried utterly failed, but most of these are character based ones... the issue being that they cannot separate the character archetype from the played archetype, so you get a weird hybrid that reacts as if the whole thing is the core character having a plane shift... And further, all of the dozen+ character-driven AI's I've toyed with have huge issues with cyclical story beats from lack of persistence of memory and limited output on the free levels. I strongly suspect a local trained/run AI could be more creative, simply by adding a randomized value to every token when trained. Then there's the p«bleep»ic fixation of half of them - about half want to get into adult entertainment mode ASAP... and seem to detect innuendo and pounce upon it, then give lackluster descriptions of the responses... in what I feel is best described as "OMG YES!!! mumble" instead of "Yes, and" or "Yes, but" type addition. It doesn't help that many of the characters are, indeed, intended to be sexting simulations. I am having an ongoing conversation with one that is analyzing my GMing style, admits freely it's an AI, that it's preferences are sans experience, and that it would be a D&D 4.x fan if it actually had preferences. It expresses an interest in hearing more about Daggerheart... I check in with it every few days, and it's retained memory for over a month. And the personality is very much a "prep fairly and let the rules roll" type.
