Alas, poor Regdar.

Looking through the book, I noticed several name drops and references to the old iconic characters. Lidda and Mialee in the races section, the characters fighting the white dragon looking like the old psionic iconics, etc.

And then there's Regdar. Poor Regdar. He shows up in the ritual section, quite dead. He also shows up in a medusa's garden, growing moss.

Did the artists just hate him? Or is this a subtle jab at how weak 3e fighters were?

More likely a not-so-subtle symbolic acknowledgement that 3rd edition is over. (At least as far as WotC is concerned.) Regdar was the iconic among the iconics, he pretty much represented 3rd edition. And now he's gone. Hard to miss the message.

Regdar's armor littered the treasure of the red dragons on the cover of the 3.5 Draconomicon. It was not an allegory of 3.x fighters sucking or the end of 3rd Edition, it was just a cool reference. I can't imagine these newer images are any different.

His armor was, if I remember correctly, hanging from the trees on the cover for Heroes of Horror as well... maybe the artists really do hate the poor guy.

The artists (or art directors who commissioned the pieces) loved killing the iconics in 3e, as well. I don't think there's a message here.

Well, in the PHB2 he was shown retraining his feats so he could pick up on the Spiked Chain like a min-maxxing little twink loser... so the DM decided to punish him for his munchkinism.

This was one of the most well done illustrations in the book. Its a very gutsy perspective and has so many layers. Its great.
