Just watched the first two shows. I like it, with some reservations. First, I agree with Snarff that this feels almost as much Bladerunner as Alien. It's taking some big swings at heady concepts (what is a person?), and I like the ambition. The claustrophobic visuals, especially in the second episode, are on point for the franchise, and they do a good job of keeping the xenomorph mostly concealed, and thus scarier. I like that there are other scary aliens, as well - Alien death scenes tend to be repetitive, but these new creepy critters are adding new, nasty flavours to the mix. It looks good, though it is shot at a high frame rate giving it a kind of soap opera effect on my TV - I usually have that handled but for some reason it isn't working here so I will have to figure out the setting it needs. The cast is mostly good so far. I think the "boy genius" character is not very convincing, but I like the lead. The children in adult bodies plot device is...weirdly handled. The writing in general is kind of sloppy; I can forgive a certain amount of exposition given the world building they are doing, but still. And a lot of the decisions are inexplicable, like sending all the priceless hybrids (the Lost Boys - Disney/Fox product placement much?) into the crash site - sure they have super bodies, but that should just make a bunch of kids running around a disaster area exponentially more trouble. Or narrowly surviving the xeno attack only to be mesmerized by a baseball, and then meet two rescuers, discover one is your long lost sister, and at no point mention the giant freaking monster running around killing everyone. Also...the wig-wearing folks who are so into their party that they haven't noticed a giant freaking spacecraft has just split their building in two? Seriously? What the hell was the scene about? So...plotting is kinda dumb, but the other elements are strong enough that I still enjoyed it, even though my suspension of disbelief was being sorely tested, especially in the second episode. Edit: Also, it is weird that 100 years in the future all of the past references are to our era.
