I can't remember where I read it, but the people who went on this voyage were actually stupid. It's not a mistake. They were idiots who were castigated by the scientific community already. They were not respected and the ideas they were putting forth were universally mocked. However, the Big Boss of the business was VERY interested in immortality, or at least not dying yet, and so, no matter how long a shot it was, as this may be the ONLY shot, was willing to take it. It meant though, that he wasn't getting the top of the field to go, it was more like the bottom of the bottom. That they were bumbling fools was actually the point, and that they made such large mistakes was to be expected. The only character or individual there that was really supposed to be up to par was David, from what I remember of what they wrote. Even Shaw (though turning up to be more capable then expected) was not supposed to be all that great. It's like sending a bunch of miners on a scientific expedition. The point of the expedition wasn't science (first movie) but to get the alien life form (which the android was the one who was supposed to do it, at ANY EXPENSE). In this (Prometheus) one, it was to get immortality if possible...at ANY expense. The others didn't matter (and in fact, the longer it took them to catch on or know the better). With David, as long as the Boss survived, it would be expected (once again) that the android could handle anything else that should be needed.
