I've considered, mostly as an exercise, a 4 axis alignment system, dividing the law/chaos and good/evil axes into two each.
Law/Chaos:
Conservative/Liberal: This axis would measure your character's political beliefs, or whether your character is more likely to talk things over with an oppressive tyrant or just overthrow him.
Disciplined/Undisciplined: measures your character's level of orderliness when seeking his goals. A monk and a paladin would have to be disciplined. A typical bard would probably be at best neutral.
Good/Evil:
Selfless/Selfish: your character's willingness to sacrifice for others. A paladin would probably have to be selfless (though a case could conceivably be made for neutral).
Moral/Amoral: measures the means your character is willing to use to achieve a goal. A paladin would definitely have to be moral.
