I was discussing with a friend how best one could defend yourself from multiple attackers. With this idea, I thought I'd take a D&D approach. Four 1st level commoners attempt to mug a 1st level fighter. The commoners are armed with daggers, but the fighter is unarmed and unarmored. The commoners threaten the fighter, and the fighter guesses that they're going to attack him, so he makes the first move, catching them off guard. Our commoners are named Abe, Ben, Carl, and Don. The fighter is Lee. Commoners - AC 10, hp 3, attack +0 (d4, dagger). Lee - AC 11, hp 12, attack +3 (d3+2 nonlethal, unarmed). Approach One: The Beating Lee punches one of the thugs, Abe. Abe is flat-footed and doesn't get to make an attack of opportunity. Lee hits for 5 nonlethal damage, dropping Abe with a strong fist to the face. The three remaining commoners surround Lee. Since Lee doesn't have Improved Unarmed Strike, they can surround him with ease. Ben and Carl flank, Don doesn't. Ben hits for 3 damage, managing to stab Lee in the arm. The next round, Lee adjusts 5 ft. to get out of the flank, then punches Ben. Both his punch and Ben's attack of opportunity miss. The commoners again surround him. Carl stabs Lee in the back of his shoulder for 2 damage, and Don cuts Lee across his forehead for 1 damage. Lee tries the same maneuver, and again he misses, and so does the attack of opportunity. The thugs surround Lee and strike twice for 5 damage, stabbing him in the kidney and slashing his forearm. Lee manages to slam Ben's face into the wall of alley, dealing 5 damage and dropping Ben. Not trained warriors, Don and Carl don't try to flank again, and just lunge, but even then, Don hits Lee for another 4 damage, jabbing between Lee's ribs. Lee gurgles and falls to the ground. The two of them mug him and leave him for dead, picking up their unconscious friends and dragging them off. Approach Two: The Fight After Lee drops Abe, he grabs Abe's knife. The commoners cannot flank Lee with ease, and the threat of being killed deters them a bit. Lee is able to stab them without getting attacked back, but eventually the last thug is able to take him down. Lee gets killed out of anger, and only Abe and the last thug make it out alive. Approach Three: The Brawl Lee gets the drop on Abe and grapples him. He deals enough damage to knock Abe out, but he holds onto the body for cover, and takes Abe's dagger. The three commoners attack, but all of them either miss or end up stabbing their friend's body. Lee tries to attack, but misses, so he backs up five feet to keep them from flanking. The commoners again attack and are thwarted by the cover. Lee manages to stab Ben for 3 damage, leaving him disabled, and then he backs up. Ben falls back, but Carl and Don come in to flank him and get around the cover provided by Abe's (now stabbed and dead) body. Lee's attack of opportunity misses, so the two commoners attack and both hit, for a total of 7 damage. Lee drops Abe and stabs Carl in the stomach, then steps away and grabs Carl's sagging body to use it as cover again. Don is freaked out by this creep, and he doesn't want to stab another one of his friends, so he turns and runs. Ben tries to run, but Lee's not going to take any chances, so he chases down Ben and knocks him out. This was just me rambling on ideas of fighting. Anyone have any comments about how they think a four-on-one fight might play out? Basically I'm shooting for the idea that some muggers try to take on a trained warrior. In d20 Modern, it'd go differently, since it's harder to knock someone out unless you can pass their damage threshold. We'd end up with Lee punching Abe, and just surprising him, instead of knocking him out. Lee'd have to take a -4 penalty to try to do lethal damage if he wanted to drop his foes.
