Alter Self

What happens if you cast alter self to turn yourself into something with wings or a tail and you are wearing armor that isn't tailored for wings or a tail?

From the SRD:

When the change occurs, your equipment, if any, either remains worn or held by the new form (if it is capable of wearing or holding the item), or melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When you revert to your true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on your body they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items you wore in the assumed form and can’t wear in your normal form fall off and land at your feet; any that you could wear in either form or carry in a body part common to both forms at the time of reversion are still held in the same way. Any part of the body or piece of equipment that is separated from the whole reverts to its true form.

I would say that the armor "melds into the new form and becoms nonfunctional"

To counterpoint:

Take, for example, a suit of full plate. I'm turning from a human into an avariel. Both are capable of wearing full plate. I would say, therefore, that the gear changes shape to fit the new form, in the same way that the full plate would resize if you turned into a halfling.

I'd say a human and an avariel could both wear full plate, but an avariel could not wear full plate designed for a human.

I'd also say that changing from human to avariel would cause your armour to merge and become non-function, in the same way a human's turning into a halfling would cause his armour to merge and become non-functional.

Not sure that I agree with the first statement Glass unless you are saying that because an avariel is thinner in the body the wings can fit in the "extra" space (which I still do not really agree with anyway ;) ). I could go the human wearing avariel plate as there are no extra limbs, but there would be two holes in the armour for the wings. Also there is the problem of wearing someone elses suit of full plate not yet resized for you.

However a question for the 2nd paragraph, you are basically saying that if the armour goes through ANY change then it merges and becomes non-functional. How do you adjudicate full plate and Alter Self since the full plate needs to be individually tailered or resized? Or is that a rule that you do not use?

And I also think that the armour melds and becomes non-functional.

Sorry, I missed a 'not' there.

Any change of size or body shape yes.

I do use that rule (in theory at least, although I don't think fitting into someone else's full plate has ever come up). For that reason, even a human to (non-winged) elf change, for example, would merge your full plate, whereas chainmail would stay on.
