I've looked over Monte's ranger, and its just straight and away over powered. Now for giving up just a few bonus feats and heavy armor, a fighter can gain many more skills, and animal companion, and SPELLS!! That seems preety crazy to me. My beef with the ranger is not really that's its underpowered, I think it is a little but not a whole lot. My problem is that he never really gets to be cool at anything, compared to the other classes. Ranger: I have a +2 damage against that favored enemy!! Fighter: I have weapon spec, I get +2 all the time. Ranger: My skills are really good. Rogue: Sure, sure, whatever. Ranger: I have some really great spells. Druid: Yeah, all carbon copies of mine, and your caster level sucks. Fighters and Barbs shine in combat, each in their own way. Clerics/Wiz/and Sorc shine through their spells. Druids have wildshape. Rogues have awesome skills and sneak attack can change the course of combat. Bards have some unique spells for arcane casters and are great in roleplaying situations. Monks have cool stuff out the butt. The paladin has some paladin only abilites that are awesome at fighting evil. The ranger has a mismash of things, nothign of which he is really superior at to anyone else. Based on your alls replys, I've changed up my ranger a tad. He now has 6+int skills, 1d10 hd, and no spells except animal friendship. Also I changed the stalker ability to: Free Strider: The ranger can act as if always possesing the freedom of movement spell. And I changed stealth to be only in outdoors areas for rangers. Most of you critiqued my ranger, and said it wasn't that great, but I didn't really understand why. 1) Do you think he's too weak/strong? 2) Everyone complained about the stealth ability, yet the ranger now has a spell that gives him +10 to move silently and hide!! 3) Most everyone wanted bonus feats. I think that's the fighters area and should stay that way. Again, I don't want the ranger to be a copy of another class, I want him to stand out. If the special abilites aren't all that unique, then please help me out with some better choices I would absolutely LOVE to hear them.
