The anchoress cast it as a silenced spell because she had taken a vow of silence long ago. Why she did it is detailed above. The "sinister gnomes" didn't feel the need to go meet the party directly since they were in the process of deciding to work against them. There was nothing they needed to learn from them at that point so why go and chat? It didn't occur to them that they might get overruled by their own allies.I'm not trying to justify what I did or make excuses, but please keep in mind that I was improvising most of this as it developed. :\</blockquote>
