I wish I had been there for this one, but a friend of mine brought a new purple 20 sided dice to the game, and said 'This is going to roll great...", as he gave it a test roll. Naturally, the first roll was a 1. Later that evening in a battle with squees', (goblins or any other 1/2 CR or less threat), He managed to roll nothing but 1's on his to hit rolls. The finale number was 7 or 9, I forget which. The thing is, it was a home brew system, long before 3E, and it had crit charts. In the end, he killed over half the party, while the squees' did virtually nothing. The dice was chucked out the window, and he and another player have had a phobia about purple ever since. Funny thing is, the dice was back the next day. The DM's mom found it the yard and returned it. The player even went so far as to eradicate the 1 from it's surface with a steak knife. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was now lighter on the 1 side, and more likely to a 1 from now on. The DM kept it, tempting people to use it for years. It really did seem to have a way of screwing you when it was the worst time for you. My personal record was 3 1's in a row, but I firmly belive that it was only due to the fact that I could make no more rolls for that encounter. Our party was clibing a cliff into the layer of a "Wombat", read Batman esque man-bat hybrid. This being the same homebrew system, and a DM who was an ass, there was a fear check at every monster. Golins were low, dragons high, ect. If you faild or suceeded against them, you gained a permanent +/- 1 to save vs the same type of creature. So it jumps out at us, and my max courage score PC rolls a 1. I scream like a little girl. Since my move was higher than the Wombat's, I run, instead of being frozen in fear. Well, I'm in a tunnel, only one way to run... So the DM lets me make an Intelligence check to realize I was going off a cliff. I roll a 1 and pull a classic Wile E. Cyote. As I falling, I try to grab the rope that we used to climb the cliff, and roll another 1. I hit and go unconcious. The thing that really irks me is that everyone finished the fight, and then looted the cavern before coming to heal me. They're PC's had no if I was dying or not, but gold came first. I was just along the way back. The same DM also had a homebrew pirates game, using only the d12. Every one started with a d12 in gold. You could keep rolling for more gold so long as you met a certain number, determined by your nationality. One time I just kept rolling, and ended up with hundreds of gold. Being a tradesman had its perks, until our fist fight where I got critted in the head. Should have bought a helmet. There was a time that a short term player named Chris rolled 3 20's on 3 dice in one throw. It was on a bet no less. The running joke is that he is still owed a mountain of green twinkies.
